Hello Klary, could you start by telling us a bit about your background and how you got started in the music industry?
Hi! Thank you for having me here today. I started my music journey when I was only 4 years old. I’ve always loved music and always loved to sing. The other children used to watch cartoons, but I used to spend hours in front of MTV watching music videos by the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. In 2005, while on a trip to visit my relatives in Indonesia, I saw how big of an impact music can have worldwide and that’s when I realised that the music career was my path. But only in 2009 I started actually trying to succeed, I started participating in singing competitions and I started collaborating with other artists that lived in my area in Italy. Throughout the following 14 years I auditioned for many talent shows, I sang in different acoustic duos and bands but then eventually I continued my journey as a solo artist.
What role has your upbringing and early life experiences played in shaping your musical style and perspective?
My past experiences are a huge part of who I am today. I haven’t had the happiest childhood and I got bullied in school for my look and my skin colour. My mental health was heavily affected throughout the years, but growing up and finding my safe shelter in music and in my family made me become a stronger person with a big dream and a big motivation.
I used to prefer pop slow ballads but with time I found my personal musical style to be more upbeat. I want to bring joy and happiness to people through my music.
Can you share some of the challenges and highlights of your journey in the music industry so far?
I’ve started to pursue the singing career in 2009, it’s been 14 years of rejections. I tried everything I possibly could but nothing ever worked. I tried to do gigs in many venues and pubs both in Italy and in London and found it very hard, no one was hiring me. I auditioned for many famous talents shows and never passed the first audition. Even being part of all those bands and acoustic duos was not working. I tried to make videos of me singing covers and I was uploading them online in hopes that it would make any difference but that as well didn’t work out for me. After struggling to move forward with my career for so long I started releasing my own music few years ago and finally I found a producer in London, Romello, who believes in me, and since February 2022 we have been releasing music together and it’s been amazing since. I love all the tracks we’ve worked on so far and we have many more coming out in the future!
Can you share some interesting or lesser-known facts about yourself that your fans might not be aware of?
Well, I think that something that most of people might not know about me is that everything looks so perfect and nice on social media but in reality, I’ve struggled with my mental health a lot, I suffered from social anxiety, panic attacks and depression. Therapy was key for my recovery and I’m still working on it.
Congratulations on your newest single, “Feel You.” What was the inspiration behind this song?
Thank you! I’m very proud of how my music is improving and changing with time and hard work.
I’m very reserved with my life and the way I carry myself in social situations so when I wrote “Feel You” I thought I might let myself loose a bit, exploring my deepest thoughts, and do something different from what people would expect me to do.
“Feel You” is about temptations and sins, it’s about sensuality and not following society rules and do whatever you feel like doing, without caring what people might say or think about you.
Can you describe the creative process behind writing and producing “Feel You”?
Romello and I were getting drinks in a bar one night and he told me that he had a cool EDM track for me. He sent it to me straight away and when I listened to it the first time I fell in love immediately. The beat and the rhythm were amazing so we started to work on it the next day. Romello had already a melody in mind for my vocals, I took that as inspiration and wrote the lyrics in just a few hours. It took then, a few months to mix and master the track and shoot the music video but the result has definitely exceeded my expectations.
What was the most memorable moment or experience during the creation of this single?
I think the most memorable moment was definitely going to the studio to record it. I remember that every time I was recording a section and listening back to it, I was feeling more and more excited and when I listened to all the recordings together after adding all backing vocals, I felt the urge to dance and both me and Romello were dancing in the studio and couldn’t stop. It was fantastic!
Are there any specific themes or concepts you explored in “Feel You” that you’d like your audience to pay close attention to?
Thank you for asking this, actually there are few concepts that I used in “Feel You” and you can see them all in the music video.
I wanted to incorporate Adam and Eve with the snake and the apple, to symbolize that I’m both tempted and tempting others to do something that is forbidden.
Other themes I took inspiration from are the fairy tales “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Snow White” to symbolize that looks are deceiving and it’s very easy to disguise ourselves as something that the Society will approve and then do something that goes completely against it.
What’s your favourite part of “Feel You,” whether it’s a lyric, melody, or instrumental element, and why?
I love everything about “Feel You”, the lyrics, the melody and the instrumental. But I have to admit that my favourite part is definitely the bass in the instrumentals, I love to listen to it with my big speakers at home, probably bothering my neighbours. It makes me want to dance and maybe…who knows, my neighbours might be dancing to it too!
What’s next for Klary in terms of both personal growth and musical exploration?
I’m still working on improving my vocal skills, there are so many things that I want to learn and that I want to try. I’m also working on growing my fanbase so I’m hoping to do more gigs in 2024 and hopefully I will find a music manager that can help me out with that, as at the moment I’m working independently and doing everything by myself.
I have more songs I’m working on with Romello, that I hope I will be able to release every 4 or 5 months. So stay tuned, my next song is just around the corner!
