Interview with Jett Jano about “JETT” (EP)

Hey! How did you get into music?

Well, my dad was a singer/songwriter/musician. so I guess you can say it runs through my blood really. Ever since I could remember I’ve always sung and danced in front of anybody I possibly could. That’s really the only time I’d come alive. I was extremely shy growing up and sooooo socially awkward. except for when it was time to go on stage. That was my safe space. I really would become another person. outside of that I stayed to myself a lot and journaled and stuff as a kid (I know dork vibes totally lol)  even to this day tbh I’m a bit of a recluse and introvert, I like my “me” time lololol

Who are some of your musical influences?

Musical influences… gee I’d say honestly I’m influenced and inspired by good music in general. Good music of all genres. I’m actually a really huge fan of jazz music. That’s like my go to lol. Davis (Miles) and Coltraine (John) are everything. I mean but some of my idols would totally have to be some of the greats; you know The Mj’s and The Prince’s of the world.  don’t judge me for saying this (lol) but I’m also a huge bobby brown fan and, to be honest; he along with Teddy Riley and Pharrell Williams are truly it for me. If we’re talking modern day I’d definitely say frank ocean, Kaytranada, and Lacy (Steve) totally.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Be your own artist and always be confident in what you’re doing. and also be intentional about your moves. move with purpose always.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw my inspiration from life. My life experiences. I always say this but my music is authentically me, it’s really an in-depth and detailed look at what goes on inside my mind and life. The trials, the errors, the ups & downs. My music really is my own personal testimony and I hope through my testimony someone out there, even if it’s one person, can relate and know they’re not alone.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry?

hmmmm that’s a good one, I mean honestly, to keep it simple I think we’re in the “do it yourself” era/ the “independence” era finally lol

I think more artists are realizing that you can truly do it on your own and be extremely successful. you just have to put in the work and stay consistent. so my thoughts on the current state of the industry are that “it is what you make it”  perspective is everything! it’s all about how you as the artist choose to look at things and situations.

What’s the story behind your latest EP, ”JETT ”?

Well it’s just a 4 song alt-r&b/house upbeat & feel-good project (say that 4 times fast lol) talking about love and its many facets of it. I wanted people to just feel good when they listen to it. for any and everyone to be able to rock to it, from 2 to 92. all races, all sexes, errbody lol.  It’s a vibe!!!!

Can you shortly describe each of the tracks that are on the EP?

(haha) ok I’ll make it as short as possible lol

it’s about loveeeeeee lol alllll love lol

Except for groove theory; now people tell me that that’s really a vibe lol. (I’ont see it tho, though I mean I absolutely loveeeeee all my music that’s not necessarily my fav track from the ep, I’m just sayin’ lol) but nah that one’s about letting go, being free, partying, and having a good time. okay well and love too lolol

Honestly, I’m in this place where I’m truly accepting myself as myself, flaws, vices, and all. and no longer care anymore really about ppls opinions of me or anything like that. I’m living my life for me truly and owning my terms and it’s sooooo “effing” liberating.  I just feel good really and I wanted my music to reflect that.

Why should people listen to it?

Why should you not listen is the question LOL.

It really is a “vibe” real talk.

How do you know when a work is finished?

I can’t explain it really, it’s just this feeling I get. almost kinda like butterflies in my stomach, Like I’m all smiles and I start geeking and I’m just like: “Yes this is it!!!!!”

What are your favorite musical genres, and are there any you dislike?

Yea my all time favorite is jazz. I absofreakinglutely love it. everything about it just speaks to me. I’d love to cut a full jazz album one day. That would be everything!!! but yea jazz and House music. Ooh ooh ooh house music has a very special place in my heart and lives rent free in my head forever. My moms is a huge house head, and growing up that’s all I heard, that and Baltimore club music, which is in my opinion a form of house music also.

And when it comes to genres I dislike, I honestly can’t say that I dislike any one genre. I may not care for certain songs in different genres (lol) but never the genre itself. because at the end of the day, it’s all a form of art and art is all subjective and up to one’s own interpretation of that particular piece of work. plus ” a bop” is “a bop” in any genre lol.

Would you like to say anything to emerging artists?

Yea there’s only one of you! You are uniquely made and only YOU can offer and do what it is YOU do. So go forth and believe that. Show ppl who you are, you never know whose life you’re impacting by you standing in your truth and courageously showing who you are to the world.

And always move with intention
