Conversation with Philip Nance about “Cheap Gold”

Can you share a bit about your upbringing and how it has influenced your music?

Growing up i was heavily influenced by many different artists. My dad listened to 90s country and classic rock, and my mom listened to anything from Eminem to three doors down so i have a wide range of musical influences.

What was the moment you realized music was your calling?

I started actually playing music around 20, but i did not start singing until I was probably 22 or 23. I bought my first guitar from a buddy of mine, started learning cords and writing.

How do you stay creatively inspired, especially when facing writer’s block?

I write about true stories that either happen to myself or people close to me in my life. Even when I have writers block i try to find experiences in my life that are worth writing about.

What challenges have you faced along the way, and how have they shaped you as an artist?

As any artist can say, there are challenges everyday. Social media content and engagement is my biggest challenge. Playing gigs and booking is the easy part, the hard part is staying up to date with social media, and now a days you have to have good social media presence.

Can you describe a day in your life when you’re not making music?

I am actually a 3rd grade math & science teacher. I work Monday-Friday teaching and go gig on the weekends. In between that i try to find time to write and make content for social media.

“Cheap Gold” has such a unique feel—what was the inspiration behind the track?

I love moody emotional tracks. The lyrics are emotional and I wanted the instrumentation to portray that as well. I love the spacey sounds as well as a little bit of rock and roll at the ends of the song.

Can you walk us through the creative process for “Cheap Gold”—from idea to final product?

The idea behind cheap gold was losing something whether that be a relationship or a loved one and trying to fill the void with all the things that might take away the pain for a moment but it is only cheap gold because it will not last, the pain will come back.

What was the most challenging part of bringing “Cheap Gold” to life?

Recording the track was the most dificult part. I feel like we did a great job of tracking to give the song the emotional feel that we were going for.

How do you hope listeners feel when they hear “Cheap Gold” for the first time?

I think that is dependent on who is listening and their past. I just hope that they can relate to the lyrics in their own way and i hope the music can bring emotion to the listener.

How does “Cheap Gold” fit into the larger narrative of your music, and what can fans expect next?

Cheap Gold is a single in a 3 song EP called “For The Noise”. So there will be 1 more single come out after “Cheap Gold”. This EP is an extension of the storyline from our last album titled, “Last Call”.
