Conversation with Mexx Heart about “Deceptive Intentions”

Hello Mexx Heart! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single, “Deceptive Intentions”?

Hello! The inspiration behind “deceptive intentions” directly follows the storyline of the namesake film, “Deceptive Intentions” by Robert L Parker. “Deceptive Intentions” was written from the perspective of Vanessa, the main character. Living in a world of chaos and trying to find your place in the world while also not being able to trust anyone other than yourself.

What emotions or messages were you hoping to convey through this song?

Mostly betrayal and just, since that’s the films center themes.

How did the songwriting process for “Deceptive Intentions” differ from your previous releases?

Writing for film specifically can vary. “Deceptive Intentions” was supposed to be its own genre, separate from mine. I still ended up loving it. It’s meant for film and to be theatric. It’s dramatic, and emotional.”

Did you encounter any challenges while creating this single, and how did you overcome them?

A few songwriting blocks happened. I did consult with a producer while writing. None of the ideas were used in the end, having outside critique helped complete the song, so I’m grateful for that.

Can you walk us through the production process? Did you collaborate with any new producers or musicians on this track?

“Deceptive Intentions” is actually self produced, and I tracked vocals at a small local studio here in Nashville. The track was entirely self-produced in my home and the lyrics were all self written. I had some advice given by a former friend but ultimately, this is a Mexx Heart song from beginning process to end. And I’m very proud of that.

Do you have a favorite lyric or moment in the song? If so, why does it stand out to you?

The line “nothing’s at my door, melding into my dimension, my mind is all but gone” the lyrics imply delusions and paranoia and the track becomes more haunting to convince the listener that the storyteller is actually experiencing these things. I think that part of the song, lyrics and melody, really amplifies the song and pulls people more into it.

If you could perform this song in any dream location, where would it be and why?

Dream location? I’d really just want to perform it live on TV, like Kimmel or SNL. I could see it having a smokey set with a band and dark themes. The overlapping vocals i think make it difficult to perform live but I’ve performed it before and it’s been well recieved.

Do you see “Deceptive Intentions” as part of a larger project, like an upcoming album or EP?

Not really. It really stands out on its own. It was written for film and it will always belong to film.

What has been the most rewarding part of creating and releasing “Deceptive Intentions”?

The surprise drop. No announcement, no promotion, no hints. Nothing. I loved seeing people not expect it when it came out.

What’s next for you following the release of this single? Can fans expect more new music soon?

Yes! For certain! And more self produced projects as well!
