“When Loves The Motive” is such a compelling title—what inspired the name, and how does it reflect the emotional core of the project?
“So the title originally was intended for an R&B EP I had in the works a few years back but it never quite came together correctly. I really enjoyed the name and wanted to keep it so I decided to apply it to an instrumental project instead with the theme being the importance of love in our lives as creatives. I feel it opened a lot of cool possibilities and I had a ton of fun coming up with the content to pair with the music for it!”
This is your second instrumental album. How did your approach differ from your debut, “Unknown Advantage”?
“So for this project I made a lot of the music directly after putting “Unknown Advantage” together so it was rather easy to roll from one project to the next. The only difference was the styles and themes. I felt “Unknown Advantage” was very bold, inspiring and motivational in sound while “When Loves The Motive” deals in a place of affection, emotion and also gratitude to make up the story through audio. Overall to me that was the biggest difference was telling two separate stories within the production.”
In what ways does “When Loves The Motive” mark an evolution in your sound or production techniques?
“I feel it’s the next step in my sound as far as just getting better overall with sound selection and putting songs together. I aim for each new project to see self improvement and I felt this one did just that.”
What was the first track you completed for the album, and did it help shape the direction of the rest?
“I can’t quite remember but I feel that the intro “Outside Looking In” might’ve been one of the earlier ones. It had a similar energy to some of the tracks on “Unknown Advantage” so I want to say it was made sometime in 2023.”
Which track proved to be the most challenging to finish, and why?
“This project didn’t have really any challenges as far as mixing or putting it together because I felt very confident in the sound selection and pairing of everything. I think that’s also a great benchmark to look at to see the amount of progress I’ve made from one album to the next which is always encouraging.”
Instrumental music relies heavily on emotion without words. How do you express feelings purely through production?
“To me it’s just about making something that can bring people to a place of thought and solace. For a few minutes you can transport a listener to a certain time in their life or create a way for them to reflect on their own existence and that’s very powerful. Melody is a big part of that so I always try and make sure the melodic elements are telling a story. Instrumental music does that for me as a fan and also as a creator which is incredibly fulfilling for sure.”
Your sound has been described as “A warm embrace.” How do you achieve that balance between soulful warmth and experimental edge?
“I really aim to just keep things natural in my process and never try to force anything. I feel if I’m staying true to what I like and what I gravitate towards then most of the time it’ll always turn out how it’s supposed to. In turn that also means other people listening will be able to resonate with it also and that is the main goal at the end of the day.”
How long did “When Loves The Motive” take to complete, from the first idea to the final master?
“Really in total it took about a year and a half from the conception of the theme to putting the music and content together for it. Coming off of my first album and going straight into this one did help a lot though and allowed me to craft it with little to no headaches.”
What do you hope listeners feel after experiencing “When Loves The Motive” from start to finish?
“Just a sense of calm. I feel this project is designed to bring some peace to people and I hope they can find their own version of that within these 10 tracks.”
What’s next after “When Loves The Motive”? Are there new sonic territories you’re eager to explore?
“I have another project coming out in the fall titled “Leaves In Soil” that I’m really excited about as well as some other cool collaborations with different artists and producers. So definitely a lot more to come before the year is over!”
